Dictation did nothing
Typing Optional needs the Microphone permission to hear you, and it is the one permission it cannot work without. Choose Welcome & Permissions… from its menu bar menu to see which permissions are on and to turn one back on. You can also open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone, and turn Typing Optional on there.
Then check the key. Dictation starts when you hold the dictation key, which is Control and Option together unless you changed it. The current key is shown in the menu bar menu, and Settings, then Dictation key, changes it.
Text went to the clipboard
That means Accessibility is off. Without it, the finished text is put on your clipboard for you to paste rather than typed at the cursor. Turn it on in System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, or from Welcome & Permissions….
Screen Recording is optional and off until you turn it on. It lets the app learn unusual spellings from what is on screen. Everything else works without it.
The first dictation is slow
The first time it runs, Typing Optional downloads its speech model and prepares it for your Mac. That happens once. After it, recognition runs on the Neural Engine and works with no network connection at all.
The newest version
Choose Check for Updates… from the menu bar menu. It also checks once a day by itself and asks before installing anything.
Buying it
Typing Optional is not on sale yet, so there is no license to enter and no account to make. When it goes on sale, this page will say how to buy it and manage it. The early access list hears first.
Where it keeps things
Your dictation history, the learned dictionary and its dated backups are in ~/Library/Application Support/TypingOptional. The speech model is in ~/Library/Application Support/FluidAudio. Settings are in ~/Library/Preferences/com.high5labs.typingoptional.plist. None of it leaves your Mac.
Removing it
Turn off Open Typing Optional at login in Settings, choose Quit Typing Optional from its menu, and drag it from Applications to the Trash. Then delete ~/Library/Application Support/TypingOptional, ~/Library/Preferences/com.high5labs.typingoptional.plist and, unless another app on your Mac uses the same speech engine, ~/Library/Application Support/FluidAudio. That is everything it kept. The permissions you granted can be removed in System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
